To clarify various provisions of the <a href="http://www.michiganvotes.org/2005-SB-601">new law</a>, that requires criminal background checks on all school employees. The bill does not make any major substantive changes to the law, but mostly clarifies provisions regarding contract workers who are not regular school employees, and the transferability of the background check information between schools. The bill also requires a school district notified that an employee has been convicted of certain serious crimes to the school district would be required to submit a report to the Department of Education within 30 days detailing any action taken. It would also require interscholastic athletic official to undergo criminal background checks.
