Whereas, Gun violence is a persistent crisis that affects communities throughout the United States and the state of Michigan, causing devastating loss of life and long-lasting trauma for families, survivors, and neighborhoods; and
Whereas, Firearm violence includes homicides, suicides, domestic violence incidents, accidental shootings, and mass casualty events, each of which inflicts immeasurable emotional, physical, and economic harm on individuals and communities; and
Whereas, Gun violence is among the leading causes of death for children and young adults in the United States and continues to disproportionately impact historically underserved communities and communities facing concentrated poverty and disinvestment; and
Whereas, Survivors of gun violence, including family members, classmates, educators, healthcare workers, first responders, and community members, often carry lasting emotional and psychological burdens resulting from exposure to firearm-related violence; and
Whereas, Communities throughout Michigan are working to reduce violence through violence interruption and intervention programs, community partnerships, trauma-informed care, educational outreach, responsible firearm storage education, and public safety initiatives designed to save lives and strengthen neighborhoods; and
Whereas, Gun Violence Awareness Month, observed each June, serves as a time to remember and honor those whose lives have been lost or forever altered by firearm violence and to uplift survivors and advocates working to prevent future tragedies; and
Whereas, The wearing of orange during Gun Violence Awareness Month has become a nationally recognized symbol of solidarity with survivors and remembrance for victims of gun violence; and
Whereas, Preventing gun violence and protecting public safety requires continued engagement among residents, educators, healthcare professionals, community organizations, law enforcement, and policymakers to pursue evidence-informed strategies and community-centered solutions that reduce violence and support safer communities; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare June 2026 as Gun Violence Awareness Month in the state of Michigan. We honor the lives of all those lost to or affected by gun violence.
