Whereas, Michigan’s young people represent the next generation of leaders, thinkers, innovators, public servants, entrepreneurs, and community builders who will shape the social, economic, and cultural future of this state; and
Whereas, Every year, tens of thousands of young people across Michigan demonstrate outstanding achievement in academics, science, technology, engineering, mathematics, the arts, athletics, social studies, entrepreneurship, civic engagement, volunteerism, professional experience, and public service, thereby strengthening the communities in which they live; and
Whereas, These contributions, often made quietly and without expectation of reward, exemplify dedication, compassion, and leadership and deserve formal recognition by this legislative body; and
Whereas, These achievements highlight the principles of good citizenship, therefore, encouraging Michigan’s youth to continue to interact, contribute, and engage in their communities as they become of voting age; and
Whereas, Highlighting the accomplishments of Michigan’s youth through a coordinated statewide effort will inspire other young people to pursue excellence, foster civic responsibility, and develop leadership skills, critical thinking, creativity, and innovation; and
Whereas, Establishing Youth Service Month will provide a formal statewide platform to honor and celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of Michigan’s youth, while promoting collaboration among schools, community organizations, and government agencies; and
Whereas, Recognizing youth achievements through a dedicated month signals to all residents that the state of Michigan values and invests in the success and well-being of its youngest residents; and
Whereas, Youth Service America’s Global Youth Service Day is April 24 to April 26, 2026, and Youth Service Month is April 10 to May 10, 2026, thereby granting Michigan’s youth an opportunity to demonstrate their dedication, compassion, and leadership to others; and
Whereas, It is fitting and proper that the Michigan House of Representatives affirms its commitment to encouraging all residents, institutions, and government bodies to acknowledge, celebrate, and support the accomplishments of youth in their communities; and
Whereas, The Michigan House of Representatives values Michigan’s young people, and recognizes Michigan’s youth as contributing members of their community; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare April 10-May 10, 2026, as Youth Service Month in the state of Michigan, a month dedicated to celebrating and uplifting the extraordinary achievements and contributions of Michigan’s young people in their schools, homes, and communities; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the Governor of Michigan, the Superintendent of Public Instruction for distribution to all school districts in the state, and to the heads of all Michigan government departments and agencies to encourage broad participation in Youth Service Month and to ensure that the achievements and contributions of young Michiganders are recognized across all levels of government and the educational system.
