Whereas, Since 1993, the United Nations has designated March 22 as World Water Day to raise awareness of the importance of freshwater and the sustainable management of water resources; and
Whereas, Anishinaabek communities in the Great Lakes region have long recognized water as sacred and life-giving, and within Anishinaabek teachings, women are recognized as caretakers and protectors of water, reflecting a deep cultural responsibility to safeguard water for future generations; and
Whereas, The state of Michigan is defined by water, shaped by glaciers and bordered by the Great Lakes, which contain approximately 20 percent of the world’s surface freshwater; and
Whereas, Freshwater provides drinking water, supports agriculture and industry, sustains recreation and tourism, and is essential to fish, wildlife, and healthy ecosystems; and
Whereas, Protecting Michigan’s water resources is critical to the health, environment, and economic prosperity of the state; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare March 22, 2026, as Michigan Water Day and World Water Day in the state of Michigan. We encourage residents to recognize the importance of clean water and to support efforts to protect and conserve water resources; and be it further
Resolved, That a copies of this resolution be transmitted to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.
