A bill to create the office of mental health and suicide prevention in the Michigan veterans affairs agency and provide for its powers and duties; and to provide for the powers and duties of certain state governmental officers and entities.
House Bills 5259, 5261, 5270, and 5271 collectively expand Michigan’s support for service members and veterans by creating a Buddy-to-Buddy mentorship program, coordinating statewide mental health and substance use outreach efforts, establishing a dedicated office within the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency to lead mental health and suicide prevention initiatives, and requiring a comprehensive transition program focused on outreach and privacy protections, all contingent on related legislation and available funding.
