2026 House Resolution 369

Whereas, Michigan residents depend on clean and reliable drinking water, and protecting Michigan’s water resources is important to the health and well-being of our communities; and

Whereas, More than one million Michigan residents rely on private drinking water wells for their water supply; and

Whereas, Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as PFAS, are a group of human-made chemicals that have been used in a variety of industrial and consumer applications and have been detected in water, soil, fish, wildlife, and other areas of Michigan’s environment; and

Whereas, As of March 2026, PFAS contamination had been identified at 340 sites in Michigan where the source of groundwater contamination was known; and

Whereas, PFAS investigations have included industrial sites, landfills, airports, military installations, and other locations where PFAS may have been used or released; and

Whereas, Since 2018, more than 7,500 samples have been collected from private and commercial drinking water wells as part of Michigan’s PFAS investigations, providing information to residents and communities about local water quality; and

Whereas, Michigan routinely tests fish for PFAS and other contaminants and provides residents with Eat Safe Fish guidance to help them make informed decisions about consuming locally caught fish; and

Whereas, Michigan continues to monitor surface water, groundwater, drinking water, fish, and other environmental resources to better understand the presence and potential sources of PFAS; and

Whereas, Public awareness and access to reliable information can help Michigan residents make informed decisions regarding their drinking water, recreational activities, and consumption of locally caught fish; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare September 21-25, 2026, as PFAS Awareness Week in the state of Michigan; and be it further

Resolved, That we encourage Michigan residents to learn more about PFAS, and take appropriate action when drinking water or eating caught fish; and be it further

Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and the Michigan PFAS Action Response Team.
