2026 House Resolution 364

Whereas, We recognize the impact of international conflict and energy-market disruptions on Michigan consumers, businesses, farmers, and families; to support efforts to stabilize energy costs; and to encourage policies that strengthen Michigan’s energy security and economic stability; and

Whereas, Michigan families, farmers, small businesses, manufacturers, and local governments depend on affordable and reliable energy to heat homes, transport goods, operate businesses, and maintain essential services; and

Whereas, International conflict and disruptions to global energy supplies can cause significant increases in the price of crude oil, gasoline, diesel fuel, heating fuels, and other energy products; and

Whereas, The ongoing conflict involving Iran has contributed to significant volatility in global oil markets, with crude oil prices rising above $100 per barrel as markets respond to concerns about disruptions to global supplies and transportation routes; and

Whereas, Higher energy prices do not stop at the gas pump, but can increase transportation, manufacturing, agricultural, heating, and other operating costs, placing additional pressure on household budgets and the prices of goods and services; and

Whereas, Michigan families are already confronting higher costs for many necessities, making energy affordability an important component of protecting household budgets and maintaining economic stability; and

Whereas, Michigan’s farmers and agricultural producers are particularly sensitive to increases in diesel, fertilizer, transportation, and other energy-related costs; and

Whereas, Michigan’s manufacturers and small businesses compete in national and international markets and can face increased costs when energy prices rise; and

Whereas, Michigan has an interest in maintaining a reliable, affordable, and diverse energy supply that includes renewable, clean, and other energy resources, can withstand international disruptions, and can help protect consumers from sudden price shocks; and

Whereas, The people of Michigan deserve a thoughtful energy policy that recognizes both the immediate need for affordable and reliable energy and the long-term importance of strengthening energy security, expanding access to diverse energy resources, including renewable and clean energy, and reducing vulnerability to international disruptions; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare September 23, 2026, as Michigan Energy Independence Day in the state of Michigan. We recognize the significant economic impact that international conflict and disruptions in global energy markets can have on Michigan families, farmers, workers, and businesses; and be it further

Resolved, That we urge Congress and the federal administration to pursue responsible policies that promote energy security, maintain reliable energy supplies, and help protect American consumers from unnecessary increases in energy costs; and be it further

Resolved, That we encourage the State of Michigan to continue pursuing policies that support reliable, affordable, and diverse energy resources, including renewable and clean energy, strengthen Michigan’s economy, and protect consumers and businesses from sudden energy-price increases; and be it further

Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and the members of Michigan’s congressional delegation.
