Whereas, Filicide, the act of a parent or caregiver causing the death of a child, is a tragic and complex issue that has lasting impacts on families, communities, and society; and
Whereas, Increasing public awareness and understanding of filicide and its warning signs may help encourage informed conversations, strengthen community awareness, and promote efforts aimed at protecting vulnerable children; and
Whereas, National Filicide Awareness Month provides an opportunity to honor the memory of children whose lives have been lost to filicide while acknowledging the profound grief experienced by surviving family members and loved ones; and
Whereas, Observing National Filicide Awareness Month encourages collaboration among medical professionals, educators, child welfare professionals, law enforcement officers, members of the judiciary, prosecutors, mental health professionals, victim advocates, and community organizations to better recognize risk factors and support child safety; and
Whereas, Greater awareness of filicide may encourage education, research, and the sharing of evidence-based practices intended to improve prevention efforts and foster informed responses from professionals and communities across the state; and
Whereas, National Filicide Awareness Month serves as an opportunity for the people of Michigan to recognize the importance of protecting children, supporting families affected by tragedy, and promoting awareness of this critical public health and public safety issue; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare August 2026 as National Filicide Awareness Month in the state of Michigan; and be it further
Resolved, That we encourage all Michiganders to recognize National Filicide Awareness Month by increasing awareness, honoring the memory of children lost to filicide, supporting affected families, and promoting education and collaboration among professionals and communities dedicated to protecting children throughout our state.
