Whereas, Beginning in 1910 as the Blessing of the Blossoms, a local celebration grew into a full festival in the 1920s before becoming the eight-day event the National Cherry Festival is today. The Festival was created to celebrate the cherry crop that defines many regions of Michigan. Annually, the Festival attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Grand Traverse region while raising awareness for the state’s cherry crop; and
Whereas, Michigan is the nation’s leading tart cherry-producing state and is recognized worldwide for its rich cherry-growing heritage; and
Whereas, The United States produces significant quantities of sweet and tart cherries each year, with Michigan producing the nation’s largest tart cherry crop and playing a critical role in supporting growers, processors, manufacturers, and rural communities across the state; and
Whereas, Tart cherries are known for their unique flavor profile and naturally occurring compounds, including polyphenols and antioxidants, which continue to be studied for their potential role in supporting health and wellness; and
Whereas, Michigan’s cherry industry contributes significantly to the state’s agricultural economy, cultural identity, and rural communities; and
Whereas, The blossoming of cherry trees each spring remains one of Michigan’s most iconic agricultural traditions; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare June 17, 2026, as Cherry Industry Day in the state of Michigan.
