Whereas, Michigan’s older adults are valued members of this state and it is our collective responsibility to ensure their safety and minimize crimes against them; and
Whereas, One in ten older adults in the United States experience abuse, neglect and exploitation and crimes against older adults often go unnoticed and unreported, leaving victims without the help and support they need; and
Whereas, All Michigan residents should watch for signs of abuse, such as physical trauma, withdrawal, depression, anxiety and fear of family members, friends, or caregivers; and
Whereas, Efforts to identify, report and investigate elder abuse are critically important in reducing the harm to older adults; and
Whereas, To help victims and to prevent more older adults from being victimized, we urge Michiganders to learn more about the signs of elder abuse and how to report it; and
Whereas, On this day, we join with other advocacy groups to help raise awareness of elder abuse in Michigan; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare June 15, 2026, as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in the state of Michigan.
