Whereas, According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 4.75 million children in the United States have asthma; and
Whereas, Nearly 28 million people in the United States have asthma; and
Whereas, Over 1 million adults and children in Michigan are living with asthma, according to state and federal health estimates; and
Whereas, Asthma is one of the most common noncommunicable diseases among children worldwide, as recognized by the World Health Organization; and
Whereas, Approximately one million emergency department visits occur annually in the United States due to asthma-related complications; and
Whereas, Asthma is a leading cause of hospitalization and school absenteeism among children with chronic disease; and
Whereas, The total economic cost of asthma in the United States has been estimated at $81 billion annually, including direct medical expenses and lost productivity; and
Whereas, Although asthma is a manageable condition, it resulted in more than 3,100 deaths in the United States in 2023, including 110 deaths in Michigan in 2023; and
Whereas, More than 21,800,000 people in the United States have food allergies, including approximately 3.9 million children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and
Whereas, The prevalence of food allergies among children has increased over the past two decades, with significant increases among Black children; and
Whereas, Children with food allergies are two to four times more likely to have asthma or other allergic conditions; and
Whereas, May is nationally recognized as Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month and provides an opportunity to increase education, advocacy, and support for individuals and families affected by these conditions; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare May 2026 as Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month in the state of Michigan. We encourage all residents to increase awareness, support those living with asthma and allergies, and promote education and prevention efforts across the state.
