Whereas, In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day. While the calendar week in which May 15th falls is also known as National Police Week; and
Whereas, National Police Week was established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, and pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others; and
Whereas, There are more than 750,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the United States, including approximately 18,000 full-time uniformed police officers in Michigan; and
Whereas, Law enforcement officers across the state of Michigan serve with courage, integrity, and dedication, working tirelessly to protect their communities and neighbors. We must also recognize the families of law enforcement officers who also make significant sacrifices, providing unwavering support to their loved ones who serve on the front lines of public safety; and
Whereas, We honor and remember those officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, recognizing their ultimate sacrifice and the lasting impact on their families, colleagues, and communities; and
Whereas, 111 federal, state, county, municipal, and U.S. territories officers died in the line of duty in 2025. Michigan’s fallen law enforcement officers will forever be honored for their sacrifice and steadfast commitment to the communities they served. By dedicating themselves to public service, these brave men and women answered the call to protect others and knowingly placed themselves in harm’s way in the line of duty; and
Whereas, Police Week provides an important opportunity for citizens to express their appreciation for the professionalism, bravery, and commitment demonstrated daily by law enforcement officers; and
Whereas, We are deeply grateful for the service and sacrifice of our local and state law enforcement officers and recognize the important contributions they make each day to the safety and well-being of the people of Michigan; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare May 10-16, 2026, as Police Week in Michigan.
