2026 House Resolution 308

A resolution to declare May 2026 as Michigan Moves Month in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, Having the ability to confidently engage in a myriad of enjoyable physical activities is impactful in improving the health and wellbeing of all Michiganders; and

Whereas, Physical activity benefits physical health and improves the quality of life overall, and is a cost-effective, fun, safe, and evidence-based public health intervention to address chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, and obesity, as well as mental illness; and

Whereas, The Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports was established in 1992 to encourage increased physical activity and improve the health of Michigan residents; and

Whereas, The Centers for Disease Control has recognized for decades the strong role parks and green spaces play in overall health within a community, and Michigan provides over one hundred public beaches, 103 state parks and recreation areas, nineteen million acres of forest, and thousands of miles of trails as places where people can be physically active; and

Whereas, Michigan is dedicated to improving the quality of life of all residents and visitors through movement to inspire and facilitate a culture of active living; and

Whereas, The ongoing observation during the month of May, “Michigan Moves Month,” is designed to celebrate, promote, and encourage every Michigander to simply move more, as evidence shows that being physically active helps improve overall physical and mental health; and

Whereas, Several health-focused organizations in Michigan, including the Michigan Fitness Club Association, Michigan Recreation and Park Association, American Heart Association, American Physical Therapy Association Michigan Chapter (APTA MI), SHAPE-MI, the Michigan Fitness Foundation, and other public and private partners, are committed to promoting fun and health-enhancing physical activity during the month of May as part of the annual celebration of “Michigan Moves Month”; and

Whereas, As a unified voice, these organizations seek to amplify the message that physical activity is an essential public health intervention for improving individual and societal health and wellbeing throughout the lifespan; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare May 2026 as Michigan Moves Month in the state of Michigan. Let this month remind us how important physical activity is to every person’s overall health and begin a commitment to physical activity all year to improve the health of all Michiganders.
