Whereas, Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with more people diagnosed each year than all other cancers combined; and
Whereas, More than 9,500 people in the United States are diagnosed with skin cancer every day; and
Whereas, In the past decade, from 2016 to 2026, the number of new invasive melanoma cases diagnosed annually has increased by 46.6 percent; and
Whereas, Ultraviolet radiation is a proven human carcinogen, and the vast majority of melanomas are caused by exposure to the sun; and
Whereas, A person’s risk for melanoma doubles if they have had more than five sunburns, highlighting the importance of early prevention and protection; and
Whereas, Regular daily use of sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher can reduce the risk of developing melanoma by 50 percent; and
Whereas, Skin cancer is highly preventable and, when detected early, is highly treatable, making public awareness and education critical to reducing its impact; and
Whereas, Skin Cancer Awareness Month serves as an opportunity to promote prevention strategies, encourage regular skin checks, and support efforts to reduce the incidence of skin cancer across the state; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare May 2026 as Skin Cancer Awareness Month in the state of Michigan. We encourage residents to take steps to protect their skin, seek regular screenings, and raise awareness about the risks of skin cancer.
