Whereas, Ice hockey holds a proud place in our nation’s athletic tradition and has long served as a source of unity, discipline, and perseverance for athletes and fans alike; and
Whereas, The state of Michigan has long been associated with excellence in ice hockey, is proudly known as “Hockeytown”, and is recognized for its passionate fan base and its history of producing countless amateur and professional players who have advanced the sport; and
Whereas, The United States Men’s and Women’s National Hockey Teams represented our nation with honor, determination, and exceptional skill on the world stage at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games; and
Whereas, Echoing the spirit of the historic “Miracle on Ice” victory at the 1980 Winter Olympics, the United States Men’s Hockey Team secured a gold-medal victory in overtime against Canada’s National Team; and
Whereas, At the moment the winning goal was scored, all four United States players on the ice were from the state of Michigan; and
Whereas, The game-winning goal was scored by Jack Hughes of Canton, with an assist from Zach Werenski of Grosse Pointe Woods, while Waterford Township native and Detroit Red Wings captain, Dylan Larkin and goaltender Connor Hellebuyck of Commerce Township were also on the ice; and
Whereas, Additional Michigan natives on the United States Men’s Hockey Team included Kyle Connor of Shelby Township, Quinn Hughes of Canton, and Assistant Executive Director John Vanbiesbrouck of Detroit; and
Whereas, The United States Women’s Hockey Team continued its longstanding tradition of international excellence and resilience by defeating Canadas Women’s National Team in overtime to capture the team’s third Olympic gold medal since 1998; and
Whereas, The game-winning goal that secured a come-from-behind victory was scored by Farmington Hills native, Megan Keller; and
Whereas, The team also featured forward Kirsten Simms of Plymouth, Assistant Coach Josh Sciba of Westland, player development staff member Ellen Hughes of Canton, and sports dietitian Carrie Aprik of Royal Oak, further reflecting Michigan’s contributions to the success of women’s hockey at the highest level; and
Whereas, Through months and years of training, teamwork, and sacrifice, all of the athletes on the United States Men’s and Women’s National Hockey Teams demonstrated the highest standards of sportsmanship and competitive excellence; and
Whereas, The success of these teams has brought immense pride to the United States of America and to the state of Michigan; and
Whereas, Their victories inspired countless young athletes, strengthened the growth of hockey across the country and this state, and reflected the strength of youth development programs, coaches, families, and communities that support amateur athletics throughout the United States, including many in the State of Michigan, where hockey remains a cherished tradition; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body commemorate the United States Men’s and Women’s National Hockey Teams for winning gold medals at the 2026 Winter Olympics. We extend our gratitude to the members, coaches, and staff for the pride and inspiration they have brought to our nation and to the people of Michigan.
