Whereas, Ramadan, the ninth month of the lunar calendar, is regarded by Muslims as the holiest month of the year and commemorates the revelation of the Qur’an, calling believers to fasting, prayer, charity, and spiritual renewal; and
Whereas, During Ramadan, Muslims observe a daily fast from dawn until sunset as an act of worship and devotion, cultivating compassion for those experiencing hardship, and a deeper consciousness of God; and
Whereas, Lent is a Christian observance preceding Easter, during which many Christians engage in prayer, fasting, repentance, self-examination, and charitable works as a means of spiritual discipline and renewal; and
Whereas, Both Ramadan and Lent are rooted in enduring traditions of sacrifice and devotion, inviting adherents to turn away from excess, to care for the vulnerable, to seek forgiveness and reconciliation, and to grow in faith and moral purpose; and
Whereas, In 2026, the beginning of Ramadan and Lent meaningfully overlap for the first time in over 80 years, presenting a unique and powerful opportunity for shared reflection, interfaith understanding, and strengthened unity among the people of Michigan; and
Whereas, The State of Michigan is home to one of the largest and most diverse Muslim populations in the United States, alongside vibrant Christian communities representing numerous denominations; and
Whereas, Throughout Michigan, Muslim and Christian residents alike demonstrate their commitment to service through charitable giving, volunteerism, interfaith dialogue, and acts of compassion that uplift neighbors and strengthen communities; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body commemorate the observance of the holy month of Ramadan and Lent. We honor their shared values of sacrifice, compassion for those in need, generosity, humility, reconciliation, and service to others; and be it further
Resolved, That this legislative body acknowledges the profound contributions of Michigan’s Muslim and Christian communities to the moral, civic, and cultural fabric of this state; and be it further
Resolved, That we encourage interfaith dialogue and unity among all residents of Michigan during this sacred time, recognizing that the overlapping observance of Ramadan and Lent offers a meaningful opportunity to strengthen mutual understanding, shared service, and commitment to the common good.
