Whereas, February 11 marks the anniversary of the historic Flint Sit-Down Strike of 1937, This anniversary is a reflection of the sacrifice, commitment, and determination of those first United Auto Workers (UAW) members who paved the way for higher pay and improved benefits that have created a positive atmosphere for all of America’s working men and women; and.
Whereas, The Flint Sit-Down Strike demonstrated the power of unity, courage, and perseverance among working men and women who stood together to demand dignity, respect, and opportunity in the workplace; and
Whereas, The tradition of wearing a white shirt on this day symbolizes the principle that all work is honorable and that blue-collar and white-collar workers alike deserve equal respect, fair treatment, and recognition for their contributions to our economy and communities; and
Whereas, Michigan’s prosperity has been built by generations of workers in manufacturing, agriculture, construction, health care, education, public safety, small businesses, and countless other industries whose labor continues to shape the strength and character of our state; and
Whereas, White Shirt Day provides an opportunity to honor the contributions of workers past and present, recognize the importance of strong labor standards, and reaffirm Michigan’s commitment to fairness, opportunity, and economic dignity for all; and
Whereas, Observing White Shirt Day encourages reflection on the values of solidarity, respect, and shared responsibility that remain essential to building thriving workplaces and resilient communities across Michigan; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare February 11, 2026, as White Shirt Day in the state of Michigan; and be it further
Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to labor organizations, worker advocacy groups, and civic institutions across the state as an expression of the Michigan House of Representatives’ recognition and appreciation for the vital role workers play in strengthening our state.
