Whereas, Black History Month is observed each year during the month of February to recognize and celebrate the achievements, sacrifices, and enduring contributions of African Americans throughout our nation’s history; and
Whereas, African Americans have played an essential role in shaping the economic, cultural, civic, and political foundations of Michigan, from building strong communities and businesses to advancing innovation, education, and public service; and
Whereas, Michigan has long been a destination for African Americans seeking opportunity, including during the Great Migration, when thousands of families came to our state to work in manufacturing, agriculture, and other industries that helped make Michigan an economic powerhouse; and
Whereas, African American leaders, entrepreneurs, veterans, educators, farm workers, laborers, artists, and public servants have strengthened our communities and enriched our shared American heritage through their dedication, resilience, and commitment to progress; and
Whereas, The story of Black history is inseparable from the story of American history, reflecting the ideals of perseverance, hard work, faith in opportunity, and belief in the promise of liberty and equal justice under the law; and
Whereas, Preserving and teaching the full truth of Black history—including its triumphs, its tragedies, and its transformative impact on American democracy—is an ethical responsibility, a civic duty, and an act of collective accountability; and
Whereas, Recognizing Black History Month provides an opportunity to educate future generations, foster understanding, and celebrate the cultural diversity that makes Michigan and our nation stronger; and
Whereas, This recognition affirms our shared commitment to the fundamental American principles of dignity, due process, and equal protection under the law for all people; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare February 2026 as Black History Month in the state of Michigan and honor the history, culture, and contributions of African Americans to the state of Michigan and the United States. We encourage all residents of Michigan to observe it with appropriate programs, activities, and reflections that honor the achievements and lasting contributions of African Americans; and be it further
Resolved, That we celebrate the rich cultural heritage and enduring legacy of African Americans in Michigan, and reaffirms our commitment to unity, opportunity, and respect for the civil liberties that define our nation.
