Whereas, Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery that denies freedom and human dignity to victims across the United States and here in Michigan; and
Whereas, Traffickers exploit children, women, and men for labor or commercial sex through force, fraud, or coercion. In 2023, the National Human Trafficking Hotline ranked Michigan among the top 10 states in reported trafficking activity, with 779 signals, 254 cases, and 506 identified victims; and
Whereas, This crime affects people of all ages, races, genders, and backgrounds. Victims are often deceived by false promises of opportunity and find themselves trapped and abused; and
Whereas, Law enforcement, advocacy organizations, and service providers across Michigan work tirelessly to prevent trafficking, prosecute traffickers, and protect survivors. Public awareness remains key to identifying victims and preventing further exploitation; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare January 2026 as Human Trafficking Awareness Month in the state of Michigan; and be it further
Resolved, That we encourage all Michiganders to participate in efforts that promote awareness, prevention, and action against human trafficking; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the Michigan State Police, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Michigan Human Trafficking Commission as a symbol of our commitment to end human trafficking in Michigan.
