A bill to limit interest and charges on medical debt; to limit actions taken to collect medical debt; to limit the sale of medical debt; to require information to be provided regarding medical debt; and to provide remedies.
House Bills 5254 and 5255 strengthen consumer protections in Michigan by treating violations of the Medical Debt Protection Act as unfair trade practices under the Consumer Protection Act and by imposing strict limits, transparency requirements, and fair-treatment standards on interest, fees, and collection practices for medical debt.
