2022 Senate Bill 1069

Ban giving governments money for “get out the vote” activities

Introduced in the Senate

June 9, 2022

Introduced by Sen. Ruth Johnson (R-14)

To make it unlawful for an individual or organization to directly or indirectly give, lend, or promise money or other resources to the Secretary of State, a county, city, township or village, or any Michigan election official, for the purpose of influencing people to vote in person or by absent voter ballot. Violations by an organization would be subject to a $100,000 fine, and $1,000 if the violator is an individual. In the 2020 election some Democratic and left-leaning groups and interests gave “get out the vote” money to local governments in municipalities with heavily Democratic majorities.
