Whereas, Michigan serves more than 3,400 miles of freight rail operated by 29 carriers, along with Amtrak passenger service connecting communities across the state and region; and
Whereas, Railroads remain one of the safest and most efficient ways to move freight, supporting Michigan’s economy, workforce, and critical supply chains; and
Whereas, Newly released 2025 data from the Federal Railroad Administration shows that the rail industry achieved its safest year on record, with the overall train accident rate declining by approximately 14 percent and derailments declining by more than 13 percent year over year; and
Whereas, Continued investment in infrastructure, workforce training, and advanced technologies has contributed to significant safety gains, including nearly a 20 percent reduction in human-factor-related incidents and record-low employee injury rates; and
Whereas, Railroads continue to deploy advanced safety technologies such as automated track inspection systems, wayside detectors, and real-time monitoring tools to proactively identify and address potential risks; and
Whereas, The railroad industry works in close partnership with first responders and local communities to enhance safety and emergency preparedness, including the AskRail mobile application, which provides real-
time hazardous materials information to emergency personnel, and the Emergency Notification System
(ENS) signage posted at highway-rail grade crossings to enable rapid reporting and response; and
Whereas, While rail safety performance continues to improve, ongoing collaboration among railroads, government agencies, and communities remains essential to reducing incidents at highway-rail grade crossings and ensuring public awareness; and
Whereas, Michigan’s Local Surface Crossing Program, now in its ninth year, has provided critical support to local road agencies to repair and upgrade the surface condition at railroad crossings, improving safety and ride quality for motorists and commercial vehicles; and
Whereas, Freight railroads help reduce congestion and infrastructure wear by removing millions of truck trips from Michigan roads each year, while also reducing emissions and improving fuel efficiency; and
Whereas, Michigan’s rail network is essential to key industries including automotive manufacturing, agriculture, energy, and mining, ensuring the efficient movement of goods throughout the state and beyond; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate, That the members of this legislative body recognize May 13, 2026, as Rail Day; and be it further
Resolved, That we recognize and celebrate the vital role of a safe, modern, and efficient freight and passenger rail system in supporting Michigan’s economy, public safety, and quality of life.
