Whereas, Child care providers and early childhood educators play a foundational role in the lives of children by providing care, stability, and early learning opportunities during critical stages of a child’s development; and
Whereas, Through their dedicated work, child care providers contribute to children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development with consistent commitment; and
Whereas, Families across Michigan rely on child care providers as a trusted source of stability and support for their children, helping families navigate the demands of daily life with confidence and peace of mind; and
Whereas, Child care providers serve in a variety of settings, including licensed child care centers, family child care homes, and in home programs, meeting the diverse needs of children in urban, suburban, and rural communities alike; and
Whereas, Access to reliable, high-quality child care directly supports Michigan’s economy by making it possible for parents to stay in the workforce and support their families; and
Whereas, In the last decade, Michigan has lost 40 percent of its child care capacity—twice the national average—contributing to the state’s 39th place ranking for workforce participation and costing an estimated $2.8 billion annually in lost productivity and economic growth; and
Whereas, In Michigan, the average monthly cost of full-time child care per month increased from $563 in 2018 to $902 in 2025, placing added financial stress on families; and
Whereas, These challenges underscore the immense pressure placed on the child care system while highlighting the extraordinary dedication of the caregivers who continue to support children and families every day, making it especially important to recognize their contributions; and
Whereas, National Child Care Provider Appreciation Day, also known as National Provider Appreciation Day, is observed annually on the Friday before Mother’s Day to recognize and honor child care providers for their service to children and families; and
Whereas, National Provider Appreciation Day was established in 1996 by a group of volunteers in New Jersey who recognized the need to acknowledge the tireless efforts of child care providers caring for the children of working parents; and
Whereas, Since its inception, recognition of National Provider Appreciation Day has continued to grow, with individuals, organizations, and governmental entities across the United States participating in this observance; and
Whereas, We renew our commitment to ensuring that the caring individuals who make up this essential workforce are recognized, supported, and truly valued; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate, That the members of this legislative body commemorate May 8, 2026, as Child Care Provider Appreciation Day; and be it further
Resolved, That we express our appreciation to child care providers across the state for their professionalism, commitment, and devotion, and we encourage Michiganders to join in recognizing the positive impact these individuals have on all our communities.
