Whereas, According to the Michigan State Police, there were 6,731 total work zone crashes, 112 serious injuries, and 28 fatalities in our state in 2024. This is slightly higher than the deaths in previous years. Work zone-involved traffic crashes decreased 16 percent from 8,017 in 2023 to 6,731 in 2024; and
Whereas, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that in 2023, the most recent year for which statistics are available throughout the country, 898 people were killed nationwide in work zones. While the majority were drivers or their passengers, the victims also included road workers; and
Whereas, On average nearly 900 people die every year nationwide in such crashes, which are often due to driver inattention, according to federal highway authorities; and
Whereas, Focusing more attention on attentive driving and work zone awareness will save the lives of both motorists and road workers; and
Whereas, We recognize National Work Zone Awareness Week in memory of all those who have died in work zone crashes; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate, That the members of this legislative body recognize April 20-24, 2026, as National Work Zone Awareness Week. We urge all Michiganders to slow down, follow all posted signs, be alert, and drive safely through work zones.
