2026 House Resolution 373

Whereas, Socialist ideology calls for the consolidation of power within government, and in doing so gives more power to the state than the people, and

Whereas, Socialism and communism perpetuate the inaccurate belief that the government can make better decisions than people can make for themselves, and

Whereas, The United States and Michigan, as democratic republics, were founded on the principle that the power of the government is derived from the people, and the policies suggested by socialist organizations throughout the country go vehemently against the core principles of this state and nation; and

Whereas, With the recent rise in political candidates self-proclaimed as Democratic Socialists, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and other activist organizations seek to grow their coalition to undermine the primary principles of this state and country; and

Whereas, These socialist organizations gained traction with the election of candidates who espouse the DSA’s platform, such as Zohran Mamdani as mayor of New York City and Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed as Democrat Senate candidate for the state of Michigan; and

Whereas, DSA backed candidates seek to take hold of the Democratic Party to promulgate their radically socialist agenda, and their take over campaign is gaining traction within the party, where now a third of Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters identify as democratic socialists; and

Whereas, Now, in 2026, there are at least 282 DSA-endorsed candidates throughout the country running for positions at every level of government, and the number increases when factoring in those who were not endorsed by the organization, but are self-proclaimed Democratic Socialists; and

Whereas, These endorsed and self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist politicians promote socialist ideals in ways that mislead voters about the true agenda that they are supporting; and

Whereas, The DSA call for abolishing the United States Senate and replacing the President and Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress; and

Whereas, The United States and the state of Michigan were founded on the belief in checks and balances, as reflected plainly in both the nation and state’s founding documents; and

Whereas, Section 2 of the Michigan Constitution states, “No person exercising powers of one branch shall exercise powers belonging to another branch…”; and

Whereas, Both the nation and this state were founded upon a rule of law designed to ensure the safety of its citizens, which is upheld, in part, by the state and federal law enforcement; and

Whereas, The DSA’s national program calls for demilitarizing police departments, disempowering police unions, and redirecting police funding as steps toward “fully abolishing the police and prison system”; and

Whereas, These policy initiatives promoted by the DSA go against the core values of this state, threaten the public safety of our communities, and undermine those who risk their lives to protect us each day; and

Whereas, Socialism and communism have repeatedly led to famine and mass murders, and the killing of over 100,000,000 people worldwide; and

Whereas, Tens of millions died in the Bolshevik Revolution, at least 10,000,000 people were sent to the gulags in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), and millions more starved in the Terror-Famine (Holodomor) in Ukraine; and

Whereas, Between 15,000,000 and 55,000,000 people starved to death in the wake of famine and devastation caused by the Great Leap Forward in China; and

Whereas, The socialist experiment in Cambodia led to the killing fields in which over a million people were gruesomely murdered; and

Whereas, Up to 3,500,000 people have starved in North Korea, dividing a land of freedom from a land of destitution; and

Whereas, The Castro regime in Cuba expropriated the land of Cuban farmers and the businesses of Cuban entrepreneurs, stealing their possessions and their livelihoods, and exiling millions with nothing but the clothes on their backs; and

Whereas, The implementation of socialism in Venezuela has turned a once-prosperous nation into a failed State with the world’s highest rate of inflation; and

Whereas, According to the beliefs of Marxism, “Communist society passes through two phases of development: the lower phase known as Socialism, and the higher phase known as Communism.” (Source); and

Whereas, This is the first step to a departure from the ideals that have united the nation for over 250 years and it is pertinent in the rise of socialist influence to denounce these policies that jeopardize individual liberty, constitutional government, and the democratic principles that safeguard freedom; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, by the House of Representatives, that this body condemns socialism, the platform of the Democratic Socialists for America, and politicians who espouse socialist views, and to oppose the implementation of socialist policies in the state of Michigan and the United States; and, be it further

Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the Senate Majority Leader of the United States Senate, and the Governor of Michigan.
