Whereas, Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week is observed annually during the first full week of October to shine a light on the injustices and misuses plaguing our civil justice system; and
Whereas, Excessive tort costs in Michigan have resulted in significant economic impacts, including nearly 100,000 jobs lost annually due to the burden of frivolous lawsuits; and
Whereas, The residents of Michigan bear a “tort tax” of over $1,100 per person per year, which drives up costs for consumers and businesses alike; and
Whereas, Lawsuit abuse undermines job creation, burdens our civil court system, and ultimately harms workers, consumers, and local economies; and
Whereas, Public awareness and education about the consequences of lawsuit abuse are essential to fostering a legal system grounded in common sense and fairness; and
Whereas, During Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week, we encourage all citizens to become informed about the impacts of lawsuit abuse, to engage in public discourse, and to support efforts to limit and discourage frivolous lawsuits; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare October 5-9, 2026, as Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week in the state of Michigan. We encourage all citizens to recognize the importance of addressing lawsuit abuse and to participate in activities and discussions that promote a fair and equitable civil justice system.
