Whereas, Fathers, whether biological, foster, or adoptive, and father-figures deserve our honor and gratitude; and
Whereas, We have a moral and economic duty to support our children, and to promote positive outcomes for youth through family support; and
Whereas, Good fathering and co-parenting during infancy, childhood, and adolescence contributes to emotional security and has overwhelming positive psychological and economic benefits for children, families, communities, and other sectors; and
Whereas, Children are less likely to face poverty, infant mortality, and abuse and/or neglect when there is an involved father in their lives; and
Whereas, The cost of fatherlessness is immense with a higher percentage of high school dropouts coming from fatherless homes than not. These children are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, low self-worth, behavioral issues, and academic failure; and
Whereas, It is important that fathers invest emotional and financial support in their children at every juncture of their lives, supporting involved, nurturing, and responsible fatherhood; and
Whereas, Strong families are the foundation of thriving communities, which are essential as we address social challenges like addiction, teen pregnancy, crime, and school dropout; and
Whereas, Throughout our state, we aim to promote positive fathering and co-parenting and to increase public awareness of the crucial role of fathers; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare June 15-21, 2026, as Responsible Fatherhood Week in the state of Michigan; and be it further
Resolved, That we recognize the immense importance of Fathers and father-figures in the lives of their children and urge responsible fatherhood in our state.
