Whereas, The profession of electrical lineworkers (linemen) is steeped in a proud tradition of personal dedication, family legacy, and professional excellence; and
Whereas, We also honor the memory of Henry Miller, the first president of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) who dedicated his life to organizing electrical workers before dying on the job on July 10, 1896, after coming into contact with a live 2,200-volt wire while repairing a line in Washington, D.C.; and
Whereas, Linemen are often among the first to respond during storms, natural disasters, and other catastrophic events, working to secure dangerous conditions and ensure the safety of other public safety personnel and the general public; and
Whereas, Linemen routinely work in hazardous environments, high atop power lines and in all weather conditions, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to ensure the reliable delivery of electricity; and
Whereas, Linemen play a critical role in sustaining and expanding the nation’s energy infrastructure, thereby supporting economic stability, public health, and national security; and
Whereas, Linemen frequently endure extended periods away from their families while performing essential work that keeps homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses operational; and
Whereas, The risks inherent in linework warrant greater public recognition and appreciation for the courage and sacrifice demonstrated by these skilled professionals; and
Whereas, April 18-25, 2026, is an appropriate week to show our appreciation for the linemen throughout Michigan who risk and sacrifice so much for the security and safety of our community; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare April 18-25, 2026, as Lineman Appreciation Week in the state of Michigan; and be it further
Resolved, That we recognize and honor the contributions of linemen in maintaining the nation’s electrical grid and protecting public safety. We commend them for their service, professionalism, and dedication.
