Whereas, The House of Representatives is pleased to recognize Michigan’s thirty-one community and tribal colleges in observance of April 2026 as Community College Month; and
Whereas, Community College Month provides an opportunity to highlight the vital role community colleges play in expanding access to postsecondary education and strengthening Michigan’s workforce and economy; and
Whereas, Michigan’s community colleges enroll approximately 295,000 students annually and award more than 20,000 degrees and 10,000 certificates each year, creating pathways to family-sustaining careers and continued educational attainment; and
Whereas, Community colleges serve as a cornerstone of Michigan’s education pipeline, enrolling more than 80 percent of the state’s dual enrollment and early middle college students and enabling thousands of high school students to earn college credit, credentials, and associate degrees; and
Whereas, Research demonstrates that participation in dual enrollment and early middle college programs increases college enrollment, persistence, and completion, supporting successful transitions into postsecondary education and careers; and
Whereas, Community colleges are leading providers of workforce training, preparing students for high-demand, high-wage careers in health care, skilled trades, and advanced manufacturing, including electricians, dental hygienists, diagnostic medical sonographers, HVAC technicians, and industrial machinery; and
Whereas, The success of Michigan’s community colleges contributes significantly to the vitality of local communities and the overall well-being of the state; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare April 2026 as Community College Month in the state of Michigan. We encourage continued awareness of the essential role community colleges play in providing education, workforce training, and opportunity; and be it further
Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the Michigan Community College Association.
