2026 House Resolution 257

A resolution to commemorate Patrick Kane of the Detroit Red Wings for becoming the all-time leading scorer among United States-born players in National Hockey League history.

Whereas, Patrick Timothy Kane II was born on November 19, 1988, in Buffalo, New York, and has established himself as one of the greatest American hockey players in history since being selected first overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks; and

Whereas, On January 29, 2026, Patrick Kane surpassed Mike Modano’s record to become the all-time leading scorer among United States-born players in the National Hockey League, eclipsing Modano’s 1,374 career points; and

Whereas, Patrick Kane also recently set records for most multi-point games by a U.S.-born player (359) and tied the record for most 20-goal seasons by a U.S.-born player with his 16th such season; and

Whereas, Mike Modano, a Hockey Hall of Famer from Livonia, Michigan, held the all-time scoring record for nearly two decades and set an exemplary standard for American hockey excellence; and

Whereas, Patrick Kane has won three Stanley Cup championships (2010, 2013, 2015), the Hart Memorial Trophy as NHL Most Valuable Player (2016), the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP (2013), the Calder Memorial Trophy as Rookie of the Year (2008), and the Art Ross Trophy as leading scorer (2016); and

Whereas, Patrick Kane has represented the United States with distinction in international competition, including at the Olympics and World Championships; and

Whereas, Patrick Kane works with Michigan-focused philanthropies such as Autographs for a Cause and the Detroit Red Wings Foundation, which supports various community initiatives and causes across the state; and

Whereas, Patrick Kane currently resides in the state of Michigan, making him not only an American hockey icon but also a valued member of our state’s community; and

Whereas, Patrick Kane’s dedication to the sport, his exceptional skill, and his sportsmanship have inspired countless young hockey players across Michigan; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body commemorate Patrick Kane for becoming the all-time leading scorer among United States-born players in National Hockey League history; and be it further

Resolved, That the members of this legislative body recognize the historic significance of this achievement and the legacy of excellence established by both Patrick Kane and Mike Modano; and be it further

Resolved, That the members of this legislative body extend their congratulations and best wishes to Patrick Kane, a Michigan resident, Detroit Red Wing, and American hockey legend, for his extraordinary career and this remarkable milestone.
