2026 House Resolution 235

A resolution to declare January 18-24, 2026, as Sanctity of Human Life Week in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, This year our nation celebrates its 250th anniversary, and we are thus reminded of the importance of our reliance on life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and that the protection of human life is inseparable from the preservation of freedom and opportunity for all; and

Whereas, A core responsibility of good government is to protect the rights of its citizens as articulated by Thomas Jefferson, who declared, “The care of human life and happiness and not their destruction is the first and only legitimate object of good government”; and

Whereas, Respect for human dignity calls upon us to value life at every stage and to extend compassion and care to those facing vulnerability, hardship, or difficult circumstances, whether young or old, weak or strong; and

Whereas, The Michigan Constitution was established to secure the blessings of freedom for ourselves and our posterity, reflecting a long-standing commitment to safeguarding human life and dignity for future generations; and

Whereas, Many women, children, and families across our state face complex challenges related to pregnancy, health, and caregiving, highlighting the importance of life-affirming supports, resources, and community-based care; and

Whereas, It is fitting, on this week, that we reflect and affirm that the sanctity of life includes recognizing the unique responsibility we each have to support and protect developing life while ensuring that women are never left without compassion, assistance, or life-affirming care; and

Whereas, A just and compassionate society is measured not only by its prosperity, but by how it treats those who are most vulnerable, the infant, the elderly, and the least of these and by its willingness to affirm the inherent worth of every human being; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare January 18-24, 2026, as Sanctity of Human Life week in the state of Michigan; and be it further

Resolved, That the citizens of this state are encouraged during this week to reflect on the value of human life, to support women, babies, and families, and to strengthen a culture of life, compassion, and respect for every human being.
