Whereas, It was with great sorrow that the members of the House of Representatives learned about the passing of Martin “Marty” Griffin. He will be remembered as a dedicated public servant by his constituents in Jackson County and the people of the state of Michigan; and
Whereas, Born and raised in Jackson, Marty Griffin graduated from Lumen Christi High School and received a degree in communications from the University of Michigan. Marty’s career in public service started during college, as an intern for U.S. Representative Carl Pursell, who Marty continued working for after his graduation; and
Whereas, Marty first began working in the Michigan Legislature as a communications analyst, before returning to Jackson to serve as a member of the city’s planning commission and its mayor from 1995 to 2006. As mayor, Marty championed Jackson’s economic redevelopment and served as a mentor to many of the future leaders of Jackson; and
Whereas, Marty followed in his father’s footsteps by serving the people of Jackson in the House of Representatives. Marty was elected twice, serving from 2007 to 2010. While in the Legislature, he served on several committees, including the committees of Agriculture, Commerce, Great Lakes and Environment, Health Policy, and New Economy and Quality of Life, and was Vice Chair of the Transportation Committee and Chair of both the Michigan Capitol Committee and the Committee on Oversight and Investigations. Marty was a capable legislator, sponsoring and co-sponsoring the adoption of many laws related to Michiganders’ health, taxes, and public safety during his terms. Marty will be remembered by this chamber for his respect, humility, and love for the community he represented; and
Whereas, Marty’s commitment to public service did not end after his terms in the House of Representatives. He again served as mayor of Jackson from 2011 to 2013, making him the longest serving mayor in Jackson history. His commitment to Jackson continued after his mayorship: leading local volunteer organizations, working as a real estate professional within his beloved community, and serving as the Jackson City Treasurer until his passing; and
Whereas, Marty’s legacy as an exemplary public servant will live on and continue to touch those in the Jackson community and across the state of Michigan. Honoring his years of service to Jackson, the city has since renamed a park in tribute to him, his father, and his brother; and
Whereas, Upon Marty Griffin’s passing, we offer our condolences to the bereaved as they mourn his loss. His contributions to this chamber and the state of Michigan will be remembered; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we offer this expression of our highest tribute to honor the memory of Martin “Marty” Griffin, a member of the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2010; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the Griffin family as evidence of our lasting esteem for his memory.
