2021 House Bill 5499

Revise cost control provision in reformed auto insurance law

Introduced in the House

Oct. 28, 2021

Introduced by Rep. Lori Stone (D-28)

To reduce a limitation on the amount an auto insurer must cover for long term attendant or nursing care to crash victims. The 2019 law that reformed the state’s auto insurance system authorized no more than 56 hours per week by an individual. The bill would change this to, “No such hourly limitation applies to limit the number of hours of attendant care services that must be paid or reimbursed to a group of individuals.” Abuse of similar provisions in the previous unreformed auto insurance law were said to be a prime contributor to this state’s prohibitively high auto insurance rates.
