2020 House Bill 5954

Allow taxpayers to pay more for school supplies

Introduced in the House

July 22, 2020

Introduced by Rep. Darrin Camilleri (D-23)

To allow an individual to choose to automatically contribute $5 or more from his or her state income tax refund to a state account that would give money to public school teachers who claim to have spent their own money on classroom supplies. This bill creates a state fund that would distribute money to school districts, and House Bill 5955 authorizes the tax breaks. Note: Under a 1970 Supreme Court ruling, school districts are required to provide an array of necessary classroom supplies at no cost to students' families (or to teachers).
