2020 House Bill 5587

Repeal sales tax on fuel; raise gas tax; “backfill” school revenue with income tax

Introduced in the House

March 5, 2020

Introduced by Rep. Mike Mueller (R-51)

To earmark 60 percent of the revenue from the gas and diesel tax increase proposed by House Bill 5585 to counties and 40 percent to cities and villages for road repairs. This is part of a legislative package comprised of House Bills 5582 to 5587 that would exempt motor fuel sales from sales tax, and earmark to schools an amount of income tax revenue equivalent to the amount of foregone sales tax revenue these fund shifts would generate.
