2020 House Bill 5586

Repeal sales tax on fuel; raise gas tax; “backfill” school revenue with income tax

Introduced in the House

March 5, 2020

Introduced by Rep. Jack O’Malley (R-101)

To earmark to the state school aid fund an amount of state income tax revenue equivalent to the amount of sales tax revenue levied on motor fuel purchases that now goes to schools. House Bill 5582 would exempt motor fuel from sales tax, House Bill 5585 would increase motor fuel taxes by an equivalent amount, and this bill would “backfill” the foregone revenue from this source (sales tax on fuel) that now goes to public schools.
