2011 Senate Bill 375

Require legislators pay 25 percent of health benefit

Introduced in the Senate

May 12, 2011

Introduced by Sen. Steve Bieda (D-9)

To require legislators to pay at least 25 percent of the health insurance benefits they are provided while in office. Note: In addition to these benefits, legislators who are in office for at least six years are eligible for full post-retirement health coverage beginning at age 55. The Senate Fiscal Agency reports that the average "family plan" coverage of former legislators costs the state $22,000 per year. Over the past several years both the House and Senate have passed bills limiting these benefits, but have never both passed the same bill and sent it on to the Governor.
