2005 Senate Bill 791

Levy no-fault insurance cross check vehicle fee

Introduced in the Senate

Oct. 5, 2005

Introduced by Sen. Beverly Hammerstrom (R-17)

To impose a new $2 fee on annual vehicle license renewals. The money would be used by the Secretary of State to implement a real-time system for cross-checking vehicle registrations and no-fault insurance coverage. Under Michigan’s no-fault insurance law drivers are required to have insurance when they register and operate a vehicle, but there is no system to monitor whether the insurance is cancelled after registration.
