2003 House Bill 4497

Introduced in the House

April 1, 2003

Introduced by Rep. Gretchen Whitmer (D-69)

To prohibit paying a person a wage or salary that is less than an amount established under a proposed definition of comparable worth, placing this under the state civil rights laws. The bill would prohibit different levels of compensation for work of “comparable value” performed by a person of a different religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, or marital status. Work of “comparable value” is defined as that requiring a “comparable composite skill, responsibility, effort, education or training, and working conditions.” Because of the difficulty of objectively comparing the value of different jobs, the interpretation of the “comparable value” standard would ultimately be determined by courts on a case-by-case basis.
