2021 House Bill 5186

Ban private funding of government election activity

Introduced in the House

July 1, 2021

Introduced by Rep. Michele Hoitenga (R-102)

To prohibit the state or local governments from accepting a “gift of money or other consideration to be used for an election related activity or for election related equipment” from “an individual or entity.” This would apply to “voter registration, voter eligibility review, mailing of election materials, sharing of voter information, creation or dissemination of advertisements about an election, or recruiting and hiring precinct election inspectors.” The bill defines “election related equipment" as “tabulators, communication devices, signs, tents, voting facilities or locations, or absent voter ballot drop boxes” and more. The bill would require the Secretary of State to submit biannual reports to the legislature on any third party contracts for an election related activity or service.
