A bill to amend 1979 PA 94, entitled “The state school aid act of 1979,” by amending section 11 (MCL 388.1611), as amended by 2023 PA 320, and by adding section 35m.

This supplemental appropriation for the state fiscal year 2024 would allocate $1.4 million from the state school aid fund to districts and intermediate districts for the purpose of providing training to teachers in the Orton-Gillingham method of instruction for students with reading difficulties. According to OrtonAcademy.org, "The Orton-Gillingham Approach is a direct, explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling does not come easily to individuals, such as those with dyslexia."
