2018 House Bill 5675

Repeal no-fault insurance, change tort rules

Introduced in the House

March 1, 2018

Introduced by Rep. Jason Sheppard (R-56)

To cap at $280,000, or $500,000 in some cases, the amount of “noneconomic loss” damages that can be awarded to plaintiffs in vehicle crash-related lawsuits (also known as “pain and suffering” awards). The bill is “tie-barred” to House Bill 5517, meaning it cannot become law unless that bill also does. HB 5517 would repeal the state’s no fault auto insurance system, including the mandate that vehicle owners must carry unlimited Personal Injury Protection.
