2018 House Bill 5410

Fill legislative vacancies by governor appointment from same party

Introduced in the House

Jan. 11, 2018

Introduced by Rep. Gary Glenn (R-98)

To require the governor to appoint a replacement when there is a vacancy in the state House or Senate. The constitution currently requires the governor to call an election to fill a vacancy, and House Joint Resolution AA would amend it to require appointment “as provided by law.” House Bill 5410 would require the leaders of the local branch of the political party to which the previous lawmaker belonged to submit three names to the governor, who would have to select and appoint one of them.
