2017 Senate Bill 281

Expand political speech regulations

Introduced in the Senate

March 29, 2017

Introduced by Sen. Steve Bieda (D-9)

To impose Michigan’s campaign finance regulatory regime on tax-exempt political entities organized under section 527 of the federal tax code (called “super-PACs”), if the organization has an officer, director, board member, or trustee who is a Michigan resident. These organizations do not engage in “express advocacy,” which is explicitly urging a yes or no vote on a specific candidate or ballot measure.
