2012 House Bill 5353

Impose restrictions on corporate political speech

Introduced in the House

Feb. 2, 2012

Introduced by Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-12)

To establish that shareholders and officers of a corporation who consent to “independent expenditures” by the corporation which advocate the election or defeat of a candidate be held individually liable for violations of the regulations on this proposed by House Bills 5348 to 5361, and subject to fines of up to $1,000 each for any violations of state regulations on these. The bill is part of a Democratic campaign finance regulation package comprised of House Bills 5348 to 5361, introduced after the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United v Federal Election Commission ruling extended to unions and corporations (including non-profit groups motivated by ideological or political concerns) the same right already recognized for individuals to spend however much they want on independent political expenditures.
