2009 House Bill 5652

Allow community service for “bad driver tax”

Introduced in the House

Dec. 8, 2009

Introduced by Rep. LaMar Lemmons (D-2)

To allow an individual whose income is below 200 percent of the poverty level and who is subject to the “driver responsibility fees” (“bad driver tax”) that are assessed for various violations, to satisfy the penalty by working for no wage at a non-profit organization, with $25 taken off the amount owed for every hour worked, up to a maximum of $500 over two years. These very expensive fees were originally adopted in 2003 to raise revenue, so as avoid spending cuts in that year’s and subsequent state government budgets.
