2008 Senate Bill 1509

Exempt old and poor from “bad driver fees”

Introduced in the Senate

Sept. 18, 2008

Introduced by Sen. Irma Clark-Coleman (D-3)

To exempt individuals age 62 and older, and those whose annual income is less than 1.5 times the federal poverty rate, from the “driver responsibility fees” (“bad driver fees”) that are assessed for various violations and must be paid for two consecutive years. These very expensive fees were originally adopted in 2003 to raise revenue so as avoid spending cuts in that year’s and subsequent state government budgets.
