This is just a hunch. I'm for a non-smoking bill, but this one seems a bit peculiar. Could the casinos be backing this bill? They may be, because if it passes as it stands, the casinos stand to gain business from smokers who will not be able to smoke in restaurants and bars. I think they should make the non-smoking bill across the board -- they

I don't see why you think this is unconstitutional. I don't know the exact figure, but probably 80% of people in Michigan do not smoke. I doubt if 80% of people are allergic to dogs. I would prefer to breathe smoke-free air when I patronize an establishment. People who smoke will have the right to do so outdoors or in their own homes. The rest

This bill is a good start. Since the motivation for this bill is for the health of Michigan workers, there should be no exemptions for casinos, cigar shops, racetracks. I would prefer to see the non-smoking laws applied to ALL establishments. That way, the restaurant and bar owners cannot complain of an unfair advantage that casinos have because smoking

BS BS BS. Losing business??? How do you know? If all bars are non-smoking, that means that non-smokers will be free to patronize them. Smokers are still free to patronize them too but they will have to go outside to have a cigarette. If this bill passes, all of the people (like me) who avoid going to smoky bars, restaurants, and casinos will be free

Cajun, are you crazy??? I'm not taking away anyone's rights. It's YOU and others that oppose this legislation who are taking away my right to breathe clean air, and the bar, restaurant, and casino employee's rights to breathe clean air in the workplace. This has nothing to do with cooking cabbage in the home. Even if this law passes

I'm in favor of banning smoking in the workplaces throughout Michigan and I'm sick of the misinformation we're seeing. There will NOT be a loss of restaurant business. I believe, since there are more non-smokers than smokers, that there will be an increase in restaurant business if all are forced to be non-smoking. I know I avoid going to

That's the only reason I can figure that my representative and many others voted against this legislation. We know the casinos have money, and this vote proves that they must have power, too! I'm ashamed. Clearly, a majority of the population would have liked to see this bill pass. There's overwhelming evidence that cigarette smoke is a health hazard

The Senate passed their version of this bill back in May. What in the heck is taking it so long to get to the floor for a vote? The Democrats crafted this bill. The Republicans improved upon it, by making it fair to all, i.e. no exemptions for non-Indian casinos, race tracks, or tobacco shops. Please pass this bill now. I know Jennifer Grandholm's busy

"...concerns that the comprehensive prohibition passed by the Senate would disadvantage certain Michigan businesses that compete with entities not affected by the proposal, in particular Detroit casinos (which compete against Indian and Canadian casinos)." Canadian Casinos are already under a smoking ban. Where is the nearest Indian casino? Mt. Pleasant

it's not a LIBERAL ISSUE -- many, many conservatives are for the ban on smoking. it's a POWER ISSUE -- I agree, except the smoker's are the ones that have all the power. Not fair to the majority in Michigan who do not smoke. it's a CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUE -- I agree. It's about the non-smoker's civil rights -- their rights to breathe smoke-free air and work
