Much as I hate to agree with a proposal that many will think smacks of 'socialism', I have to agree with this. What is the point of foreclosing on the low income when their primary residence will keep them safely housed in their own home and neighborhoods and near existing support systems? Most of these unpaid property tax bills are equal to less than two months of subsidized housing! This may keep them from the need for additional services. I actually think this bill should go farther and demand that all counties be MANDATED to publicise the fact that these waivers exist (they do not admit they exist). It would be immensely helpful if, when citizens approach a tax foreclosure and it is suspected they are low income or elderly, that some outreach referral was made to appropriate agencies that could inform citizens of services available to help them get past the crisis. This would save tons of $$ in terms of later welfare costs. I am all for expecting people to take care of themselves, but in today's economy a great many who were marginally low income have fallen into situations with their housing they cannot get out of. This makes at least as much sense as offering mortgage help and is less costly to everyone concerned.
