Why just Detroit?  Are you trying to model D.C.'s program where students are given cash rewards for grades, attendance, putting one foot in front of the other, walking upright etc?  What will you do if the Alphabetical grading system is eliminated and pass-fail-incomplete becomes standard? The bleeding hearts have cried that "red penciling' a students paper is demoralizing, what will you do about the self esteem of those that did not get top dollar? Will teachers be intimidated into giving high grades? How much thiught went into this bill?

    This is simply pathetic.

This is a continued stroll down the assinine path that has made Detroit & the Detroit Public Schools what they are today.  Pathetic.

The only correct vote on this bill is "no."  It only fosters further worship of the Dollar God.

Sen. Hansen Clarke (D) needs a reality check.  Taxpayers money should not be used to pay students to get good grades.  What these students need is an educational staff that has the initiative to not only give them a quality education, but to also educate them as to the reasons that they need to study for their future benefit.  They need to be taught to read within and outside of the classroom.  To use dictionaries and encyclopeida's.  To use libraries and internet sources to broaden their knowledge.  To excite them with the fact that knowledge can not only broaden their awareness, but lead them to the choice of a better and greater future -- as well as gaining self-esteem for their accomplishments. Gaining knowledge is the reward -- not "Cash for "A's"

I've heard it all now. This is ridiculous. Detroit should be putting their efforts into improving the educational opportunities for it's children, not in paying ransom money for grades.

It's up to the parents to EXPECT, DEMAND and REWARD good grades not the general public! Once again Democrats looking for ways to waste money - hey most MI taxpayers are LITERALLY OVERTAXED - enough already!

Cash for A's in the most simplistic courses would be a farce. A person can learn more by getting a B or C grade taking Calculus instead of some dolt taking basic math and getting an A. And why should I pay incentives for a school in Detroit, when I live in the UP, where schools are getting the shaft because of Lansing not sending enough money our way!

If anything, start a scholarship fund and match community donations to be given to all students who graduate, irregardless of grades or future intentions, to use as they wish. If the community is involved, they will push the students to adhere to a set of rules set forth by the school board. This eliminates a free handout, no questions asked.......I thought this was the way most public schools were run, or does Detroit do things differently?

Cash for As? To be paid by the taxpayers? Now I have truly heard it all! I don't even pay my own children for good grades. Why on earth should I be taxed to pay someone else's? Parents, teachers and the community in general should be demanding good grades from their students. I certainly do in my house. There shouldn't even be the option of not doing your best. This idiotic legislation needs to fail.

Detroiters will cast their vote for anyone who promises them something for nothing, such as paying them for doing what they should be doing all along if they were interested in their own future. I expect to see legislation paying kids for just showing up or for not doing something, such as assaulting someone, fathering or bearing children while in school ( Hey, I just may have hit on something), pizzing clean for a week, not getting arrested for felonies.
